Saving for a big purchase: how long it takes and when waiting for a sale pays
A big appliance often has to come out of savings. Two small calculations tell you how long it will take and whether waiting for a discount helps.
Months to save
Months needed = price / amount saved per month
A $900 appliance with $75 saved per month takes 12 months. If a 20% discount brings the price to $720, the same savings reach it in 9.6 months, about two and a half months sooner.
Waiting versus needing it now
- If your current appliance still works, waiting costs little and a sale can save real money
- If it has failed, the cost of going without (laundromats, takeout) may outweigh the discount
- Do not finance a purchase with high-interest credit just to avoid waiting
Keep a separate pot
Put the savings in a dedicated account so the money is not spent elsewhere, and keep your emergency fund separate. Some people add a small buffer, since prices and delivery fees can move.
